When dealing with professionals in the “real world”, you’re going to come across a range of people from all walks of life. This is very different than what it’s like in a College or University environment as mostly everyone there is on the same playing field. Sadly, the school system often fails to teach us how to avoid bad people.
Unfortunately, they’re everywhere. There are bad teachers, bad drivers, and bad bosses. You will never be able to escape it. What you can do, however, is learn to identify the cues and clues of bad people in your life. To start, it’s best to avoid dealing with people who say things like:
“I don’t care about money.”
“I care about my clients more than myself.”
“I’m an honest person.”
“I’m a good guy.”
Anyone who needs to PROject what they’re “thinking” onto others to help build trust with them should be someone that gets your Spidey Senses tingling.
Does Warren Buffet need to tell you he’s good at investing? No. Does Oprah need to tell you she’s trustworthy? No.
Actions speak louder than words.
For people to gain your trust, focus on what they do, not what they say.
It’s tough to do this in today’s world; you hop on Instagram, someone has a hundred thousand followers, and that appears to be “trustworthy” nowadays.
Don’t fall for the same tricks people have being doing for centuries. Make sure that you’re listening to people who have a high sense of moral character, someone who is an expert in their field, and someone your heart tells you to trust.
